  • The mechanism of traffic flow in the urban traffic network is studied and a new optimization approach for signal timing in an intersection is proposed.This approach considers not only traffic waiting delay but also stops and start ups.Combining traffic delay?stops and start ups, a concept PI (Performance Index) and a model based on PI value are presented.Using this model, the signal timing can be optimized to reduce not only traffic waiting delay but also stops and start ups.
